Furthering basic skills for adults

Results

With this project the following will be addressed and developed:

  • a toolkit to determine the need for improving basic skills
  • an online guideline – “In-Company promotion of basic skills of adults"
  • a document database
  • an implementation plan with a  package of practical measures for the cantonal level

Summary

The targeted improvement of basic skills of employees through in-company trainings poses a great challenge both for the company and for the training providers. The necessary information, experience and tools to train low-qualified employees are insufficient. This results in Swiss companies not being able to sufficiently exploit the potential benefits of vocational training in basic skills.

Against this background, the project aims at:

  • The development of a toolkit that allows companies to selectively identify the further educational needs of their employees. The toolkit is intended to cover basic skills needed in business: reading and writing, second language skills in the local official language, numeracy and use of ICTs.

  • Piloting the toolkit using four cooperating companies of varying sizes from four different sectors,  developing, implementing and evaluating course concepts, which are geared to the needs of the individual companies.

  • The development and introduction of a Web-based guideline "In-company furthering of basic skills of employees." This guideline is intended to process the project results and to contain the most important basic findings on the subject. It will be integrated in the existing website www.weiterbildung-in-kmu.ch.

  • The development of a document database incorporating the most important documents on the subject of furthering basic skills.

Many cantons are faced with the challenge of developing a holistic approach in improving the basic skills of adults while having to take varying interests into account. Headed by the Inter-Cantonal Conference for Education (IKS) within the project called "Concept, Implementation Cantons" a concept is being developed that allows the integration of existing project results (eg from the project INT) into practical application by the cantons and which also contains feasible measures.
